Ideas to enhance "Document Designer" feature
S
Scott Byrum
I’m hoping to be able to create Proposals, Statements of Work, and Status Update documents directly from SmartSuite applications like Projects, Tasks, etc. using the “Document Designer” feature. I realize “Document Designer” is a relatively new feature so wanted to offer a few ideas. My apologies if some of these already exist:
- Make it easy to mix static text with field values
- Offer option to export document to Microsoft Word or Google Docs
- Add option to insert page breaks
- Provide option to generate document at the record level
- Make it possible to pull in fields from linked app records multiple levels down (For instance, assume App A is linked to App B which is linked to App C. In a doc generated from an App A record, it would be nice to have option to pull in fields from App C)
Thanks!

Export more than just PDF, CSV, EXCEL, GOOGLE Sheets. But in MS WORD?

I understand that we are able to create a Document Designer or SmartDoc but it is all only able to export in PDF or in Excel/CSV/ Sheets. Is it possible to create an export with the fields into a future editable MS word document? It would be very helpful.

It would be nice to have the .docx export option for document designer

Thank you for posting, Patrizia Buosi! I have a few more questions for you:
- What specific features or formatting options do you need in the .docx export?
- How frequently do you anticipate using the .docx export feature?
- Are there any specific use cases or scenarios where the .docx export would be particularly beneficial for you?

Hiya Queenie Leung, thanks for this post! I have a few more questions for you:
- Could you please specify which fields you would like to be editable in the MS Word document?
- Are there any specific formatting or layout preferences for the exported MS Word document?
- Would you need the exported MS Word document to maintain any specific features or functionalities from the original document?

- Just like how you could create an invoice/contract in Document Designer. Basically, the ability the option to export to Word instead of just PDF. It would be what we designate like Vendor Name, Vendor Address, Body of what we place in the Document Designer.
- The ability to have it as landscape or change to portrait as well as possibly to have both (one page being portrait one being landscape) in the same document designer. It would be helpful for larger things like graphs or workflows that portrait would not be the best fit for.
- I would like it to maintain the original look and features from document designer. Obviously, if it's in MS word the end receiver may be able to make changes, but it's to maintain consistency of the original document going out.
It would also be helpful to capture notable changes made if it was to be sent back to say a "SmartSuite member". So, we can capture fields such as "modifications from document" as long as the overall key field identifiers and format can be recognizable in SmartSuite.

Just giving this more topic some more attention. The ability to export in other formats (pdf, Google docs) would be phenomenal. Not everyone who needs to see the documents is a SS user.

The ability to format would be great. For example, if I am sending a document to a country that uses commas instead of decimals, or have their date formatted differently. I believe that I am currently limited to the field formatting.
Also, being able to add formulas within the document, for example, to apply an exchange rate that is not a field that exists within a table. Granted, maybe this should be added as a field, but I'm sure there are other use-cases of needing to be able to use a formula to produce an outcome that does not or should not exist as a field inside a table.

Export to word would be phenomenal. We're looking for a solution to make SOW creation more automatic by pulling in our smartsuite data, but we then need to be able to let the clients redline the output. Word is still the easiest way to do this.

If this is the post for Document Designer ideas...
- When using a Linked Record; if the Field is an image field, would like to display the image. Am currently getting the file name.
- if Socials or Links Fields, can these be clickable icons?
- Ability to change the name of the header when in Table View.
- ABSOLUTE / RELATIVE feature is clever, not sure it works right yet or is best way to achieve desired effects.
a. when you flick back to a record the RELATIVE element doesn't go back to original position.
b. would be great if you could Group certain fields/elements and make them all behave as Relative.

any updates on this please? 1 year later

Also, the ability to duplicate a document like in views would be nice.

If we can make proposals, invoicing, etc., this will be a super power for Smartsuite agains competitors.
Here are some extra ideas:
- Be able to set a fix header and footer design.
- Page breaks (mentioned by Scott)
- An adaptable table that respects the header and footer space.
I'm uploading an image of what happens when your "quotation table" is too large.
Thanks!
