Brian Dollen as discussed, I think the option above works. Another option would be to allow Sub Items to be updated by automations. If that was allowed a developer could create a Sub Item field called automation log and have every automation update that field with it's own automation name. This way a developer can see on each record which automations have run against that record. In the meantime I have used a values list field and a checklist field that mimic a bit of what I am trying to accomplish. See screenshots below.
